How can Design Thinking help an HR department?

Question

HR typically has very formal processes. Is designing thinking something that HR departments can embrace? If so, what could they use it for and what are the advantages of using design thinking in HR processes?

  1. Recently DisruptHR had a Chihacks event where they used design thinking to solve for Diversity Hiring for Farmer’s Fridge, a Chicago area company who wanted to ensure that their workforce mirrored their customer diversity. The teams used design thing techniques to come up several great options for the company- including hiring practices, training, community
outreach, customer involvement etc. Design thinking uses innovative techniques to solve the issue in a nontraditional manner. In the process, it also gave examples of how traditional processes can be improved. So yes, design thinking can absolutely be used to solve real-world HR issues
